this is the news ...

10/3/8

the single is out! hurrah! it's available to buy / mail order on 7" from businessman records, that's ... businessman records and spillers or from any forthcoming gindrinker / businessman records gigs or events. or for anyone living in the future today it's downloadable from kimberley records. hopefully more stockists / outlets to be announced soon. although it'll probably be available for pennies on ebay within a month.

p.s. hope you both had a good christmas and are thus far having a happy new year. (note to self: update website more.)

7/11/7

because i like writing down palendromic dates.

also, it's approx two days to swn festival and it's just been announced/suggested/confirmed that prior to our evening show in buffalo bar (w/ dj scotch egg and charlottefield, onstage approx 9pm) we will be performing a short set in spiller's records (on the pallet at 5.15pm) with bass clef and (possibly) cate le bon. please come. i assume the spiller's one is free even if you (like me) are too tight to buy a wristband but probably best check local press for details (as they say). see you there or there or not isn't it?

17/10/7

possibly a bit late by now but there we go: please buy this months "plan b" magazine (the one with scout niblett on the cover) for exclusive gindrinker related recorded content.

thanks.

5/9/7

Hello there. Apologies for lack of new News of late. Both of us moved house, the Middleton/Sell/Harrison computer was down for a while (the Gates computer being a notebook and telephone), yadda yadda yadda. Hope you are well, all three of you. Anyway, after our hiatus - one gig in August: eleven people turn up - we have some new dates, which are listed in the gigs section. Not sure we should be listing the DJ Scotch  Egg/Charlottefield gig yet, as L#1 haven't given out the prices, but to hell with that. We have a couple of new songs: Work it out, a personal attack from God Almighty on one of His subjects (hit single potential), and Hanging is too good for these... bastards, a solemn reflection on modern twattery. Theremin is repaired (thanks, Ben), infestation of mice in Gates household (offer of cat loan refused), group finally able to rehearse at something approaching concert volume. That's all from me. TTFN, Gates.

THIS JUST IN! Businessman Records may well be releasing a seven-inch single by the group in January, will let you know. But before that happens, they are putting out a platter by Spencer McGarry Season, which will no doubt rule. So buy it when it hits the shops, later this month.

There may be other recording news to follow, but for now it's...  *holds up file* TOP SECRET.

12/6/7

sporadic news brings you the, er, news that we are SUPPORTING THE FURRIES IN CLWB TOMORROW!!! this is very last minute and very exciting. so if you were unfortunate enough to buy tickets for wednesday rather than the other days with good support bands then, sorry, but you're stuck with us. but come and have a look anyway, we're on at 8.30pm i'm told.

aces.

17/3/7

after an aborted attempt last week due to computer faliure (not ours this time) it is hopefully / potentialy a true fact that we will be doing more recording in the next week or so. this is a good thing.

21/2/7

new news new news new news. erm, well, more new links than anything else really. we did our first ever e-mail interview the other day. the results can be found here along with a review of the cdr. thanks ben.

also we have made our first appearance (to my knowledge) on the latest international time wasting phenomenon that is known as youtube. there are videos of our acoustic performances the other week here and with the "full" "orchestra" here. thanks shane. and thanks "orchestra".

3/1/7

well, sorry for the long silence, this is what happened: computer broke, this town ain’t big enough for the 22 of us came out, computer got fixed (but due to it being delicate i wasn’t allowed to download anything to it inc. ftp explorer and html editor. boo!), finished mixing with gary, cdr demo came out on our 2nd birthday and is available from us now, downloaded ftp explorer on the sly, it was christmas, it was new year, it is now. so now you know.

1/10/6

news, everyone! we are coming to that / big / giddy (depending on your point of view) london ! the artrocker showcase gig with the lovely lovely victorian english gentlmens club is now confirmed. this will be our 1st gig in england (fact!) and the 1st time i (graf) have been to our nations capitol without the intent of leaving it as soon as possible on an aeroplane. these are exciting times we live in.

also in exciting news we are going to feature on a compilation cd of cardiff bands that is coming out in november. seminal hit about fruit, as it's sometimes known, "hey! greengrocer" will be up there alongside such local legends as sweet baboo, los campesinos!, little my, the wave pictures, the loves, spencer mcgarry season and many more (22 bands in total). more details on this soon.

in further exciting news there are gigs aplenty coming up. look on the relevant page please. i'm not going to do a link cos i'm tired and if you need a link to get to another page on this very simple to navigate website wot i done built then you're probably to lazy to leave the house and go and watch bands anyway. so there.

CDR demo will be with us soon. promise.

7/8/6

Exciting news, peeps (or not, as the case may be): we will shortly be releasing a CDR, which will function as both a demo and a first release (i.e. we will be selling it at gigs etc.). It comprizes five tracks, featuring both from our Music Box session, two recorded at Graf's house, and one from the Sweet Baboo bedroom. I am working on artwork as we speak.

Thanks to everyone who attended the gig at Clwb. I was bricking it at the start, as it looked like no-one was going to turn up, but everything went all right at the end. That's the first time we've ever done an encore, even if it was one verse of an old English folk song (see? I can sing, just not in a 'rock' fashion, and anyway I choose not to). Nothing now 'til next month, when the CDR should be ready... Hang in there, kids.

17/5/6

Boom! Once more, the clarion call of the GD news agency is at large! A brief note, dear readers, to explain the current hiatus and our lack of recent performances. As a result of our D.I.Y. ethos, we only play concerts if we are asked to, and no one has asked for a while - so the merry month of May has been gin-free. Sorry. Patience, my friends, patience!

Porthcawl was surprisingly enjoyable. We didn't get bottled off (which I thought might happen), but that was mainly the result of approximately twelve people turning up... ah well. The fake snow machine is the best thing ever seen at a venue yet - more places should have one - and prices were very cheap indeed. It was almost like being in a smaller, less shitty version of Blackpool. (Disclaimer: I'm from Lancashire, and have thus been exposed to Blackpool many times. It's a shithole.)

We may have some recordings out soon, which will mainly be given away or sold at gigs. I've just listened to a live recording (by Gary Anderson) from last November, and *sighs* it's pretty good, although I sound like a young MES with a cold.  Ho-hum, all lo-fi fun, innit bwt...

19/4/6

it's my birthday. thanks.

also it's the 1st anniversary of this website. one day we might even finish making it.

3 days until porthcawl. hurrah! also there's possibly another cardiff gig coming up very very soon, keep your eyes peeled.

29/3/6

Hello, dear readers, and how are you? We've not been up to much this month, although the Howard Gardens set was a laugh. We recorded two tracks in Music Box, one of which (God of Darts) can be heard on the myspace site. The other track 'laid down' was Reilly, that charming song about a sociopath who spends his spare time berating strangers in his local.  No other exciting news, but plenty of fairly mundane stuff. So here goes! Graf has a new effect pedal, the new Whitehouse album is really good, YYY's album reckoned "okay", good friend leaves town to go travelling, new trousers bought by Middleton, new shoes (£14.99) by Gates, it rained in most of Cardiff, longest sentence outside of Ulysses contsructed...um. I could go on, but even typing this is getting me down. Anyhoo, come see us in Porthcawl, where life is cheap. TTFN, Gates.

24/2/6

well, i've just discovered that while we were busy performing the real thing in clwb last sunday mr adam walton was providing those unfortunate enough not to make it with a taste of what they could have won. yes kids, gindrinker on the radio! whoop! the afformentioned mr walton apparently played "hey! greengrocer" between a session track from the physicists and someone called hotel motel on his magical mystery tour show on radio wales. we thank him eternally.

click here  quickly to "listen again" to the whole show.

20/2/6

pointless update to keep people interested ... well, we've just finished our clwb "residency" and very good it was too. we really enjoyed all the bands we got to play with / against. except one. who shall remain nameless. next stop howard gardens ...  also, in geek news: i was pleased to note last night that the sampler that i use is EXACTLY the same as one of whitehouse's. i bet they didn't buy theirs off of ebay though.

also, many apologies to the person who got charged for a badge last night (the horror!). i forgot to make a sign saying that they were free so one of those enterprising souls of that fucking tank decided that 50p was a fair price. bless him for trying to help, but sorry to the unfortunate customer. please bring your reciept to one of us and we'll give you a full refund.

yours sincerely,

g/d inc., customer relations department

13/1/6

happy new year y'all. sorry for the long silence but first it was christmas, then it was new year, then the computer went into a coma for a while, then it was now.

there has been a slight delay on the mixing front but not to worry, "gindrinker live in dempsey's" or whatever it gets called will be with us soon.

loads of exciting gigs coming up (lookee here) in the next few weeks including this and this. oh yes.

see you there is it? remember those lovely badges are still avliable at all shows.

21/11/5

well, the live recordings are due to be mixed by sir gary twisted over the christmas period so hopefully we will have something to show for it (and he will have something to hand in for his coursework!) early in the new year. depending on how these turn out the vague plan (as it stands) is probably going to involve re-recording the guitar / other instrumental parts properly and to use those recordings with the "live" vocals as some kind of demo / cdr for giving away / selling as appropriate.

still looking for ideas for the gindrinker birthday / christmas blow out ... let us know if you have any good ones going spare ...

8/11/5

Although our set went very well on All Saint's Day, the gig was beset with problems. Apart from bands pulling out, (see below), LCJ had their car (and their equipment) stolen, meaning nightmarish train journeys for all concerned. One point about the gig: if you're going to see a show that your friends are promoting, isn't it polite to at least come and see the other bands as well? We didn't want to headline, as that would have been vain of us, but if it would have meant people staying, well...

Thanks to Uncle Gary for recording us - we'll let you know what's going to happen with that soon enough.

Now, next week's show is 14-plus, so if you are of a youthful appearance, please bring some photo ID (passport or driver's, basically), or no beer for you.

If anyone has any suggestions for something for us to do for our first anniversary next month, let us know through the usual channels. Otherwise see you soon, kiddiewinks.

18/10/5

the $hit have had to pull out of our halloween / saint's day show in dempsey's. this is unfortunate but i hope to get them to cardiff soon.

the first peel day was a very succesfull night. we played on definitely the oddest bill in cardiff (no mean feat when scotch egg and friends are mashing up the barfly at the same time!) and i was pleasantly surprised that so many people showed up when there were so many other quality gigs going on all around at the same time. so, yeah, thanks everyone! and if you didn't come see us, then that's ok also. for once we can safely asssume you have a good excuse.

also, in case you are not yet aware, we have finally got some songs up on the tintermaweb. these are "greengrocer" and "covered in bugs" and they are avaliable to listen on our shoddy excuse for a myspace page. if anyone knows the html or whatever that would make them avaliable for streaming or whatever from this site then please please please email us. but in the meanwhile, go have a listen over there. thanks.

22/9/5

good times last monday. real good times. it's not often we get to be the "pop band" of the piece, the one's with "proper tunes and everything" but it was ace. not sure if my ears will ever be the same again but, hey, who needs 'em?

just to clarify, the martini's will NOT be playing our haloween party because ff vinyl have packed them off on a tour or something instead, which is fair enough. the $hit, however, ARE bringing their "electro-punk, casio-crunk, fuck-rock, glitch-pop" to our haloween party. not sure if they are also bringing the $hitettes cheerleading troupe but here's hoping! other bands still to be confirmed as well as (quite probably) last gang in town djs. this should be a belter.

also, there are still plenty badges left of both types (they were under the counter on monday - someone forgot to put them all out). they will be avaliable from the shows and i will also try and keep a stash on me at all times (except maybe in the shower, in bed, etc. etc. but you know what i mean) so please, if you want one, just ask!

15/9/5

we got badges! they finally arrived this morning and (if i may say so myself) look awesome. there are two designs, one is "gindrinker" written in the scrawly way you can see above and the other is this logo. it is all very exciting for us. they will be avaliable from the gig on monday and, if you are in luck, from me in person in general.

in other exciting news, i hear that we get a mention in the nme student guide (out this week). unfortuantley it is under pubs rather than bands, but, what do we expect?! we still get to see our name in print which is nice. (p.s. i haven't read it yet so i'm not sure of the full context but it seems to be a Good Thing)

12/9/5

Thanks to all those who turned up on the second of the month. No thanks at all to those who turned up and then spent the rest of the time talking over the bands and generally milling around like the despearate popinjays that you are. If you want to act like Nathan Barley types, then fuck off after you've paid, you schmucks. GRRR! Anyway, we have some new dates lined up for October: in Dempsey's on the 13th (with Debi, and Sophie I Love You, Sophie I'm Dead), the 22nd, in Swansea (featuring the excellent Licking Chocolate Jesus amongst others) and - fingers crossed - the 31st, in Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff (Martini Henry Rifles, and some others when this gets confirmed). Bit nervous about next week (in Clwb, see listings passim), but I could say that about every performance. It's when I start getting confident about these things that you have to worry... TTFN, Gates.

p.s. i (graf) hasten to add ... not all of these gigs/bands are confirmed this is all just a heads up. cheers. wait for more news before booking flights / taking time off work / etc. etc.

also ... our first lot of merch is in the post! apparently. should be ready for mondays gig though. hopefully.

19/8/5

hmm, yes, ahem. it appears i agreed to do a gig in early september (the 2nd infact) at the dempsey's (our spirit-ual home (do you see what i did? clever innit?)) but i had hitherto forgoten about it and hence the gates never even heard about it until there were flyers. whoops. anywho, see (as ever) ye olde gigs page for details.

also, thanks to everyone who came/helped/conquered last tuesday. i had great fun even if nobody else did (what is with the sitting down all night? the chairs were taken away for a resaon, hippy scum! p.s. we loves you really!).

a belated happy birthday is due to the sof and a belated happy leaving work is due to the anna. big gin soaked love to you both.

this weekend i'm mostly off to the green man festival. yay, even more hippies! whoop de woo!

15/8/5

ok, gig tomorrow. huzzas! if you are on the mailing list and are wondering why you haven't had an email about the gig or anything then it's because the stupid tintermaweb has swallowed my address book and i'm too tired right now to recompile it. grr. that is what i say. grrr. maybe if i just shout into cyberspace then you might hear it anyway ....

GIG! TOMORROW! DEMPSEY'S! LOOK AT GIGS PAGE!

ok, finished now.

12/8/5

Ahoy, dear reader! Let it be known that our set on the sixteenth (next Tuesday, fact fans) will feature some slightly different versions of some of our more 'famous' tunes. I doubt the whole "I was fucking a side of ham..." nonsense will be there, although I may revert back to it if desperate/drunk enough. New material will also be played, much of it incorporating the devilish sounds of the sampler. Oh yes: Last Partisan have confirmed as openers, which is very noble of them. If you're going to come to this, please arrive early, as Herr Chapple's gang sold the place out last time (see below). I believe he's having another jumble sale, so bring some change. Last time, I got three books for one pound...yowsa! Oh, and we might have some merch by the time of the Lesson No.1 gig *rubs hands in avaricious fashion* next month. Thank 'ee, Gates.

19/7/5

just got home from another thoroughly enjoyable lesson no.1 gig featuring steveless, shooting at unarmed men and duracell in dempseys. what an awesome night. i don't think i've ever seen the place so full, not even on a twisted birthday! ah yes, what of the news? i hear you ask. and as this is the news page you have every right to. well... the news is this: shooting at unarmed men (featuring ex mcluskite jon chapple and simon alexander of king alexander fame) have confirmed their willingness to appear as headliners at our august gig. for full details see the gigs page.

also we have been cordially invited to join the bill of the next lesson no.1 show in clwb ifor bach also featuring usa is a monster, dj scotch egg, consumer electronics (apparently this is someone from whitehouse, yay!) and riotmen. this all takes place on  monday september 19th and will only cost you five of those pounds to get in. frankly, i think that's a bargain. check the lesson no.1 site for details etc.

and finally... if you haven't seen the flaming lips dvd, fearless freaks, yet then i advise you do so (as we did the other day instead of practising!). even if you don't care for the band as such it is still an excellent film/documentary. but obviously you don't have to take my word for it.

16/7/5

it's official. gindrinker will be continuing what is fast becoming their bi-monthly residency upstairs in the dempseys in EXACTLY ONE MONTHS TIME. support will come in the shape of the debut performance of the hornby pylons whilst the headline act is still to be confirmed, although i will say i am quite excited by the possibilites as they stand. that's all i have to say except ... hello mom! nice holiday?

1/7/5

we have started a "stuff" page (it is here) which i only advise you look at if you are really bored or want to learn more about everything. there is also very loose talk of a gig in july / august with a well known cardiff band and an as yet less well known cardiff band (debut appearance thereof) and us in the middle. negotiations are afoot. more when it happens. and finally ... i have a new guitar! one that works and everything. absolute bargain from the same place i get all my equipment from (here). oh yes oh yay. no more dodgy wiring, no more massive fret board that makes my delicate little hands hurt, no more lead falling out, no more cracked neck, no more taped on strap! hurrah!

22/6/5

Fun is had as we enlist a press officer, one Dagda Sevit. Translvanian by birth, Dagda is one of the most articulate people we know, and we hope he will become "the voice of Gindrinker", if not the generation. Take it away, Mister Sevit! Oh yeah, you should really buy The R. Crumb Handbook. It's ace.

14/6/5

(it's just gone midnight) actualy there is some news. i (graf) will be djing upstairs in the dempseys on wednesday night (15th)  as part of the newly christend LAST GANG IN TOWN (we decided "sh*t as f*ck", whilst very apt, probably wouldn't be too popular) dj collective type thing we invented. this is at a sweet baboo (1st time as a 4 piece) and broken leaf (teflon monkey 2: the revenge) gig. doors probably about 8pm (i guess) and the dance party action will hopefully go on until 1am if enough people turn up and keep buying booze. oh yeah, and dancing. please.

13/6/5

no actual gindrinker news, but i've just realised i'm £8 over my overdraft limit. aaargh! all donations gratefully recieved. thanks. or, even better ... put a show on, let us play, then pay us handsomley. just a thought ...

2/6/5

ha! i got a kazoo, what about you?!

17/5/5

big thanks to everyone on sunday for not throwing things or pulling the plugs out. due to what we'll call a "communication breakdown" we were left without a profesional p.a. wrestler (sound person) which meant i got my first taste of mixing bands (thanks guys!) hence the stress levels were high so the anti-nerve juice flowed a bit more freely than was intended. oh well, it's all in a nights work! also my £2 off of e-bay guitar lead decided to melt leaving me no option than to swing it round like a skipping rope in an attempt to make a connection. the ed gave me a stern lecture and told me to burn it so i think i'm going to make a video of that act and put it up here for everyone's enjoyment.

many apologies to chay for getting caught in the cross fire. you know that we know that it wasn't your fault. also many thanks to the ed for saving our asses, steve baboo and andy partisan for the loan of mics and stands and mr evans for looking after the door.

11/5/5

wow, over a week with no updates. we must have been busy! well, a little bit. on sunday d.c. added VOCALS to the tracks we are recording with SWEET BABOO. sounding pretty GOOD (if i can say so myself), although they are still NOT FINISHED yet.

also there have been some new aditions to the FAMILY. thanks to the combined joys of a certain well known on line auction site and birthday money i have bought myself a STYLOPHONE (£8 inc. postage - bargain!) and a SAMPLER. so look out for some even MORE ANNOYING noises coming from the corner of the room (it seems a bit over enthusiastic to call it a stage) at dempsey's THIS SUNDAY!

look forward to seeing everyone on SUNDAY (May 15th) for our 1st HEADLINE show. also looking forward to last partisan (unfortunatley drewless) and kutosis both in PARTY mood for paul's birthday. also there is a possibility that there might be some g.d./l.p. crossover D.J. SHENNANIGANS (the innagural efforts of "sh*t as f*ck djs") but we'll have to wait and see.

3/5/5

Yesterday both members of G/D attended a concert by Weird War, Gin Palace (no relation), and King Alexander. All three were awesome, and Mister Gates got to make a fool of himself talking to Ian Svenonious, which resembled his encounter with Mark E. Smith, i.e. drunken idiot hassles pop legend shocker. Today marked the first ever contribution to this page by Gates, in the form of this posting. (As a general rule of thumb, I tend to use capitals more often then Graf. I'm anal like that, as anyone who has had a text message from me will testify.) We're playing in Dempsey's AGAIN on th' 15th. More on that later. Flyers for this are being threatened as I write...

27/4/5

just added two more photos from saturday (taken by mr pattison) to the "live" pictures page (click here). very atmospheric they are too.

26/4/5

last saturday saw our first jaunt out of cardiff to perform for the good people of newport. great fun was had by all. thanks again to lesson no.1, whoever lent us their bass amp, and everyone who came down. yes. there are some (well, two) photos of the performance in the pictures section.

19/4/5

we played clwb supporting electric eel shock (awesome!) and weapons of mass belief (hmm) . it was all good fun despite the fact that because it was my birthday we were too busy celebrating to write a set list and that my guitar finally broke down into the coughing spluttering mess of wood and electronics that it was always destined to become. ho hum. maybe some pictures from the ever photographing simon ayre will be posted soon. or maybe not. it's a mystery.

also i bought the rights to this 'ere webspace. yay!
